Tropic World: Africa and Asia at Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, IL
Tropic World, an indoor primate habitat at the Brookfield Zoo in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, is one of the largest zoo animal exhibits in the world. Visitors to Tropic World have the opportunity to get up close and personal with many species of monkeys, the primate cousins to humans. Asia and Africa are two continents that are home to many different monkeys, and there is a separate habitat in Tropic World for each continent. The Asia section is home to exotic white-cheeked gibbons, who can swing more than 20 feet across when traveling from tree to tree. Also from Asia are orangutans, who are known for building intricate nests in their self-made treehouses.
The highlight of the African section of Tropic World is the gorilla exhibit, which houses a family of gorillas that spans four generations. This is significant because gorillas are endangered - each birth of a new gorilla and the continuation of the species is cause for celebration. In addition to the gorillas are African mandrills, mangabeys, and colobuses - just a few of the many species of primates that are native to Africa. Admission to Tropic World is included in the zoo's nominal admission price. Zoo hours vary depending on the season, so please contact the Brookfield Zoo for specific hours during your visit.
