Chicago Weather and Packing Advice

"If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute." It's an old saying, and used in a lot of locations, but it's certainly a favorite of Chicagoans. The Chicago area experiences cold, windy, winters and warm summers. There's no better place to experience the changing seasons, and fall and spring months run the full spectrum of weather conditions. Comfortable lake breezes make for an excellent vacation climate in the summer months, and breathtaking snowfalls make the city a beautiful winter destination.

Spring - The spring months start to see warmer weather in the Chicago area. Tulips bloom in full force along Michigan Avenue, and you'll see (some of the more fearless) natives wearing shorts as soon as the temperature moves above 30 degrees. March sees daily highs in the 40s with lows in the low 30s. It's not uncommon to see the last of the snow in early March. April and May average daily highs in the upper 50s and 60s, with lows dropping to the low 40s and 50s. Though this time of year is not as harsh as the winter months, you will still want to bring a jacket, warm clothes, and an umbrella for those Spring Showers.

Summer - By June, it will seem as if the entire city is outdoors, enjoying the warm weather. The bike paths along Lake Michigan, outdoor dining venues, and parks are all at their busiest. Summer sees warm weather with daily high temperatures averaging from the high 70s to the low 90s. Average daily lows are in the 70s. Lake breezes make the weather comfortable, but if you're staying outside of the city, expect to feel a bit more of the heat and humidity. Bring short sleeves and sunscreen to help with the summertime sun.

Fall — The fall months begin to cool off again. In September, the daily highs average in the mid 70s, with lows dropping to the high 50s. October brings vibrant displays of fall colors, and temperatures with daily highs in the 60s, lows dropping into the mid 40s. November is even cooler, with daily highs averaging in the upper 40s and lows dropping into the mid 30s. You'll definitely want to be packing sweaters and warm clothing during this season.

Winter - The winter months are cold and snowy. If you love snow, this is the time of year to travel. The winter months see highs in the twenties and thirties with lows dropping down into the single digits (and sometimes going below zero with the wind chill). You'll need to bring gloves, hats and warm jackets at this time of year.

Packing Advice...

Chicago's climate is marked by long, warm summers and frigid winters. Good preparation and common sense is a good rule of thumb to follow.

  • Planning Your Packing. Anything you forget to pack, you'll have to buy. It is wise to make a list of everything you need to take with you and refer to it as you pack. This will ensure that nothing will be overlooked (and anything that is, is a good excuse to go shopping).
  • Preparing Clothes. Lay everything out before you pack. Fold, layer, and pack all like items together. Use undergarments and socks to fill space. Put toiletries and loose items in waterproof containers, in a kit or separate bag.
  • Packing For Family Members. With the exception of toddlers and infants, each family member should be able to carry at least one piece of luggage. A small backpack is ideal when traveling with young children.
  • Packing For Comfort. Products that will help you withstand the humidity, as well as, sunscreen, are a must. Natural fibers like cotton or silk and light colors are good choices for hot days. To avoid aching feet, pack a pair of familiar walking shoes.

Always check the forecast before leaving to ensure that you are properly prepared for any weather changes.
