Chicago WeatherThe weather in the Windy City lives up to its name with Chicago's four distinct seasons. Chicago's climate is characterized by extremes — hot summers and cold winters. And then there are the wind gusts off Lake Michigan, which make temperatures feel substantially cooler. Winter in Chicago means average temperatures between 22 degrees and 36 degrees. There's an average monthly precipitation of 2.2 inches, much of it in the form of sudden snowstorms and ice. Layer warm clothing when visiting during winter and wear scarves, hats, boots and heavy coats when venturing outside. Spring is generally cool but pleasant. Daily temperatures range from 42 degrees to 59 degrees and monthly precipitation averages about 3.5 inches. Layer your clothing and bring a jacket to be prepared for temperature changes, and grab some rain gear. Summer can get humid in Chicago, but the Lake Michigan breezes help. Temperatures are typically between 64 degrees and 82 degrees, and precipitation is about 3.9 inches per month. Pack lightweight summer attire and bring an umbrella. A light jacket is a good idea when venturing out in the evening. Autumn is similar to spring — fairly cool but still good weather. Temperatures are generally between 46 degrees and 63 degrees. Precipitation averages 3.1 inches per month. Dress in layers and grab a jacket for the cooler days. Don't forget an umbrella — a good travel accessory any time of year in Chicago. Most people say the best times to come to Chicago are from mid-September to October and from May to early June for the best temperatures and weather. Whatever the season, a windbreaker is a good carry-along item to kill any chill the wind gusts might bring. Your best bet is to check the weather forecast before you head out so you can plan for what's ahead. |
