Jersey Boys is a musical performed in a documentary style and based on the lives of The Four Seasons, one of the most successful rock 'n roll groups of the '60s. The musical has been the recipient of four Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Featured Actor, and Best Lighting Design.
Jersey Boys is based on the life stories of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, which included Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. The group consisted of four blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey, but they became the biggest American pop sensation of all time. They wrote all of their own songs, invented their own sound and sold 175 million records throughout the world, all before they turned thirty years old.
The musical is set to dozens of classic rock tunes and many believe it to be better than Mamma Mia!, which is set to the music of ABBA. These boys were considered to be from the "hood" and should they have not become pop stars, they were likely to have become mobsters. Therefore, Jersey Boys also includes the key elements of jail, loan sharks, casual sex, ODs and drugs and it is all set in the Garden State during the 1950's. Combine these key elements and you've got the real life stories of these four boys from Jersey and a great combination for a fantastic musical. If you're interested in the lives of the Jersey Boys and how they overcame their roots, then you're going to want to check out this musical on your next visit to Chicago.
