Rock City Gardens in Lookout Mountain, TNLocated just on the Georgia border, Rock City Gardens is a paradise of whimsy for children and, for parents, just weird enough to love.
It was Hunter S Thompson who uttered the phrase, "Too weird to live, too rare to die." Perhaps that's why Rock City is still a popular attraction more than fifty years after its founding. The site is breathtaking for many reasons, but outdoor enthusiasts aside, to weekend warriors who seek out the weird roadside attractions rarely found outside this nation, Rock City is the motherlode. The Rainbow Room is lovely, where the windows are encased with colored film in order to gain a new outlook on the forested surroundings. The path in which all attractions are linked, Enchanted Trail, then winds around the site with seemingly no respect to logic or architecture, but offers a generous hike and view of barely touched flora. Here is when it gets surreal. Scattered amongst the trees and glistening stones, such sights as concrete egg-men and elves can be found. They are propped up without anything announcing their presence, and without the almost eerie feeling of being watched, could be overlooked by inattentive wanderers all together. Past elves, or a few animate workers in pig or egg costumes perhaps, is Fairyland Caverns. Like all sculpture here, you're greeted by a splash of day-glo and sense of the absurd. Gnomes leer from behind stalactites and crystals, and the entire thing is set to the midi soundtrack of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. Still awash in blacklight and ultraviolet paint, visitors then descend into the grotto that is Mother Goose Village. Here, families can bare witness to lifesize dioramas of various Mother Goose rhymes that include a Howdy-Doody dish running away with a grinning spoon. All in all, this location really is a must visit for all ages. While definitely weird, Rock City falls far short of creepy. Children appreciate the fairytale atmosphere and even the most mature of adults fall into the sense that they've stepped into the other side of the looking glass.
