Located on the land where he spent most of his childhood, the President James K. Polk State Historic Site commemorates the life and times of the country's eleventh president. Exhibits detail significant events of the Polk administration, such as the Mexican-American War, the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California, and include a short film outlining Polk's accomplishments while in office. Visitors can also walk through reconstructions of typical homestead buildings, including a log house, kitchen, and barn which are furnished with authentic pieces from the early 1800s.
Special events include the President Polk Birthday Celebration, a yearly living history program featuring demonstrations and hands-on activities based on 1795, the year Polk was born, and a Christmas program that recalls 18th-century holiday customs. Visitors can take a guided tour of the main house and kitchen, and enjoy a relaxing picnic on the grounds.
