Established in 1936 as the state's first art museum, the Mint Museum of Art has grown to encompass an impressive array of permanent exhibits, including one of the most notable collections of gold coins minted at the U.S. Mint in Charlotte, and a collection of English art created during the reign of King George III and Queen Charlotte, the city's namesake. Visitors to the Museum are in for a veritable history of world art as they walk through galleries featuring American, pre-Columbian, European, African, and Asian fine and decorative arts, ceramics, historic maps, photography, and contemporary art.
A wonderful display of historic costumes contains over six thousand fashion designs and accessories from the past three centuries, and includes pieces by Doucet, Fortuny, Dior, Givenchy, and Versace. The Museum also hosts many special events, including chamber concerts, poetry readings, lectures, and gallery walks, while Family Days offer scavenger hunts and fun art activities.
