So named by pioneers because one of its cliffs resembles the profile of an old man, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range and offers some of the best hiking trails in the South. Hikers of all skill levels can enjoy the stunning mountain scenery from twelve miles of alpine trails, including rigorous backcountry trails that traverse rugged peaks, and easy nature walks from which to enjoy the view and a picnic.
A highlight of a hike at Grandfather Mountain is the Mile High Swinging Bridge, a 228-foot suspension bridge that spans an 80-foot chasm and offers visitors a spectacular view from Linville Peak. The area is also home to seven environmental habitats, including those for black bears, river otters, cougars, eagles, and deer, as well as the Nature Museum, which features exhibits about the mountain's 742-million-year history. Visitors can take advantage of several special programs and events, including camera clinics, KidFest, Highland Games, and the annual Singing on the Mountain gospel festival.
