Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston, SC
Recount the harsh days and ways of slavery, and the role Charleston played in this trade by visiting the Old Slave Mart Museum. This particular building at 6 Chalmers St. in Charleston was an actual location for which slave trading took place, and continued until it finally ended in 1863.
Since the building's ominous beginnings, it has been a tenemant and an auto repair shop among other things, before finally being purchased in 1938 by Miriam B. Wilson. By now, many locals came to refer this building as "The Old Slave Mart," so Wilson established the dwelling as a hotel under this name. Inside, you'll find many african-american arts and crafts on display.
In 1964, the museum changed hands, and Judith Wragg Chase and Louise Wragg Graves took over and placed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and operated it until its closure in 1987.
The museum will once again open to the public very soon, and the details will be posted as they formulate.
