HoustonPottersGuildShopandGallery in Houston, TX
The Houston Potters Guild Shop and Gallery in Houston, Texas is a retail cooperative owned and operated by potters in the Houston metropolitan area that serves as an outlet for high quality handmade pottery.
The shop carries a wide variety of pottery including earthenware, porcelain, salt-fired pieces, raku, and stoneware. The store also carries commissioned work and special orders of fine art pieces from artists. Photography and jewelry are also available.
The Houston Potters Guild Shop and Gallery was established in 1980 and is Houston's first and only clay cooperative. Friendly potters are always around to answer questions. The atmosphere is relaxing and the prices are reasonable.
The Potters Guild shop came into existence because local potters lost a location to see their work. There was once a little gallery called Phoenix Gallery where workshops were held by established potters and artists, and where local clay artists could sell their work. The facility lasted from the last 1970s until early 1980 before it closed.
Janis Ross is responsible for getting the Potters Guild Shop started. At that time she was the president of the Potters Guild, a 50- to 60-member organization. With $1000 to start and an all-woman membership, the Houston Potters Guild Shop and Gallery came into existence.
The Potters Guild Shop and Gallery features work from highly established artists and potters, but also work from artists and potters who've only been working at their craft for a few years.
The gallery holds many exhibits. The exhibits often vary monthly. There's typically a holiday event held in December.
