Avery Research Center for African-American History & Culture in Charleston, SC
The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture has been a Charleston mainstay since 1985, fulfilling its goals in serving as a community outreach on African-American issues. In addition to serving as a research and archives center with over 4,000 holdings, the Avery Research Center also hosts a museum dedicated to African American history in the Charleston area as well as offer tours of its historic site.
One popular permanent gallery includes photographs, manuscripts and artifacts for the exhibit titled, "South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition: The Negro Department Revisited." The museum also hosts classic and contemporary art from South Carolina artists. Special events sponsored by the Avery Research Center includes temporary exhibitions, a traveling exhibition program, workshops, lectures, jazz performances, book signings, poetry readings and more, so check back often for event updates!
