Agriculture Day at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site

Charles Towne Landing is a historical park located in Charleston whose goal is to educate visitors about the history and birth of South Carolina. Every year in May, the park holds its annual Agriculture Day, where historical recreationists demonstrate how crops were farmed and food was harvested in the 17th century. Charleston, once indeed known as "Charles Towne," was founded in 1670 and the park reflects the time of its founding. At Agriculture Day, visitors can learn about which plants and crops were used for medicines, fabric dyes, and fragrances. Also explored is the role that indentured servants played in the 1600s - visitors will see servant quarters and learn about how servants cooked food over an open fire.

Contemporary agriculture in South Carolina is also explored - visiting biologist guest speakers educate visitors about green agriculture, native plants, and current farming practices. While visiting Charles Towne Landing, visitors can take advantage of the warm weather to enjoy the other activities offered. The park features a zoo that houses native animal species, the Adventure, a restored 17th-century cargo ship, and exhibits that display various archaeological findings from South Carolina. Many attractions at the park are free - please contact the park directly for an up-to-date event schedule and possible admission fees.
