Charleston is full of great attractions that really allow you to step back in time and feel the history of this place.

The Original Charleston Walk

For a general overview and history lesson on the city of Charleston, there is no better tour than the Original Charleston Walk. This walking tour will take you past some of the most important sights and attractions in the city. Your knowledgeable guides will provide you with inside information and facts about the history of the places you are viewing. Some of the things you will see include: Charleston Harbor, the Old Powder Magazine, and the Dock Street Theater, just to name a few.

Middleton Place Plantation and Historic Homes

There are a great many tours offered in Charleston that can take you back in time. They range in subject, but several of them relate to Colonial homes and historic houses. The Middleton Place Plantation was established in 1755 and survives to this day. The stableyards and garden, along with several outbuildings have also withstood the test of time. The Main House has been converted into a museum that holds priceless family heirlooms and artifacts. Here you can view artwork, furnishings, clothing and more. In addition to the beauty of the house, the magnificence of the grounds at Middleton Place is unparalleled. The 65 acres of lush green land includes several gardens, ponds, and other outdoor wonders. Visiting the Middleton Place Plantation will give you just a taste of how aristocratic early Americans lived. Another great tour that showcases life in the 18th and 19th centuries is the Historic Homes Walk. During this tour you will walk through some of Charleston's most sophisticated neighborhoods and see some of the architectural wonders of a past time. Two of the most significant homes you will see on the tour are the Edmonston-Alston House and the Nathaniel Russel House. The former was built in 1825 and the latter in 1808.

Patriots of Charleston and Slavery and Freedom Tours

If you want to get to know some of the people who once called Charleston home, the Patriots of Charleston tour will enlighten you as to the identities of some of the most important past residents of the city. See the homes and gravesites of some of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence and some of the sites that had significance during the Revolutionary War. Also included in the tour are stops at the Old Exchange Building and the Provost Dungeon. An entirely different tour in Charleston relates to the people who lived in the city as slaves. In Slavery and Freedom is a walking tour that takes you around Charleston pointing out sites related to African Americans in pre-Civil War times. At one time the city was the largest slave port in the United States, making for a long and brutal history. Some things you will see on this tour include the Old Slave Mart and sites important to the Civil Rights Movement.

For those of you who love history, or even if you wish to have a great vacation in Charleston, taking a step back in the past is a wonderful way to spend a day, or even a week. All of the tours mentioned above will provide insight to the history of the town, as well as interesting information, and some beautiful sights.

The Original Charleston Walk
Very interesting. I'm sure all the guides are good, but they are what makes the trip. He left us in a different place than we started and that was a little confusing. Also, the meeting place had changed from the time we booked. Fortunately, the vendor switched us without a problem.
