Mashpee Commons
Located on the arm-shaped peninsula of Cape Cod, the nationally recognized Mashpee Commons Shopping Mall is located in the center of Mashpee, Massachusetts. Considered as one of the fastest growing areas, the city of Mashpee is recognized as one of the remaining origins for the Native American tribe, the Wampanoah Nation, who met the Pilgrims when our country first began at Plymouth.
The Mashpee Commons project is an open-air shopping center that has won much recognition in addition to several awards. Over the years the Mashpee Commons has transformed from a traditional shopping mall to a growing area of commercial tenants and residential units above the rental spaces. Containing a church, a library, post office, six-screen movie theatre, several restaurants, a senior center, elderly housing, and a Boys and Girls Club, the center was built in a New England town center style. A gridded walkable center that is shopper friendly offers sidewalks, benches, plazas, on-street parking, and street trees—all within a three-block area that is now the shopping center. With efforts that remain true to its natural Native American heritage, the area's board holds firm to a "green tourism" attitude which focuses on its growth and economic vitality. A tranquil area, it encompasses 278,946 square feet of commercialism with 40 units for residential usage above the retail sections.
One of the first cities to innovate social challenged communities, removing the older traditional neighborhoods and downtowns, large cities over the nations are fast mimicking the Mashpee Commons appeal. Historical communities are attracting visitors and locals alike with a compact, high density, attractive mixed-project appeal for the new developments.
