Weather & What to Wear Year-round in Cape Cod

Locals say 'If you don't like the weather in New England, wait five minutes.' That statement pretty much holds true in Cape Cod.

When visiting Cape Cod, it's important to remember that it's a maritime climate. That means more variable temperatures between land and on the water, and sometimes it will feel like you're packing for more than one season. But you'll be prepared.

The offshore breeze makes warm clothing a must when you head out on a boat, even in the warmest summer months.

Month By Month:

If you're visiting during January, February or March, be prepared for some snow and rain, with high temperatures in the 40s and 50s and lows in the 20s. There are some sunny days, but it is the winter season, so dress appropriately. Heavy coats, gloves, hats and boots are good ideas. Average monthly precipitation this time of year is about 3.6 inches.

Coming to Cape Cod in April means being ready for weather from two seasons ' winter and spring. Daily temperatures range between 37 degrees and 52 degrees. Early April can bring light snow, while late April is often much warmer. Don medium to heavy coats and waterproof footwear. Average monthly precipitation in April is 3.5 inches.

In May, it finally starts to warm up a bit, with average temperatures between 48 degrees and 62 degrees and average monthly precipitation of about 3 inches. It's not exactly hot weather, but do bring at least one warmer weather outfit, along with lightweight pants, sweaters and a light jacket.

June brings daily temperatures ranging from 56 degrees to 72 degrees and average monthly precipitation around 3.1 inches. Lightweight shirts and pants and a few pairs of shorts are appropriate, along with a light jacket for the cooler evening hours and a swimsuit for those willing to brave the sometimes still cool waters.

By July and August, full summer weather hits Cape Cod and temperatures are typically between 62 degrees and 78 degrees. Average monthly precipitation is about 3 inches. You should bring your swimsuit and plenty of summer clothing, but also a few warmer items for nighttime and the cool beach breezes.

September's weather is a lot like July and August, only a bit cooler. Temperatures typically range between 55 degrees and 70 degrees and average precipitation during the month is 3.7 inches. It gets a little cooler later in the month, so bring along a light jacket.

October nights can get pretty cool, in the 30s and 40s, so bring along a few warmer outfits and a jacket. But the daytime temperatures are still in the 50s and 60s, with average monthly precipitation of 3.6 inches.

Be prepared to wear layers when November comes. Pack plenty of warm winter clothing and a good pair of gloves for the temperatures that are typically between 38 degrees and 51 degrees. Average monthly precipitation is 4.4 inches, but snow is rare during November.

Pack similarly in December, but expect occasional snowfall. Daily temperatures range between 28 degrees and 43 degrees and average monthly precipitation is about 3.8 inches.
