Beaches, Nature Trails, Sports, and Family Attractions in Cape Cod

Late fall through early spring are the Cape's off season, and with it comes lower lodging prices, lighter traffic and less crowds. While not all of the area attractions are open, and the weather isn't exactly swimming weather, there's a lot to be said for visiting at this time of year. There's still plenty to do, and just because you can't swim in the water, doesn't mean you can't enjoy the beauty of the beaches.

Activities For Everyone:

  • Chatham Lighthouse: Visit one of the most famous and interesting lighthouses in Cape Cod. The original twin lighthouses were built in the year 1808, and were moved to North Eastham in 1923. Even though the lighthouse is closed to the public, visitors to the area flock to the lighthouse fence to see the view of the lighthouse and shoreline. When you visit in the off season, you'll avoid the crowds when you see this popular landmark.
    For the Nature Lover:
  • Kalmus Beach: While you can't go swimming, you can enjoy the crisp, cool air, the sound of the waves and the scent of the ocean. The beach is located in the small town of Hyannis and is one of the most popular, due to its easy access.
  • White Cedar Swamp Trail: If you enjoy the cooler weather, a refreshing hike on this trail is the perfect off-season activity. Take a brisk walk among the elevated boardwalk that winds through a swamp of Atlantic white cedars, red maples and black and white oaks.
  • Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: This wildlife sanctuary features nature trails that wind through over 750 acres of marshes, cedar swamp and coastal dunes. The sanctuary offers year-round lectures and tours for nature lovers.

For 21 and Over:

  • Hyport Brewing Company: Visit the only brew pub on all of Cape Cod. This brewery offers a variety of tastes to fit any style. While visiting, be sure to order the Flounder, a sampling of six of their own beers delivered on a 'flounder' tray.
    For Golfers:
  • Holly Ridge Golf Club: This year-round golf club offers golfers a classic New England par 3 course. You'll enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that the course has to offer, and it's a great place for beginners to get their feet wet.
