Just northwest of Cancun, Mexico, but worlds away from that busy commercial enterprise is Holbox Island. Here, a small fishing village, the only settlement on the island, carries on life as the people have done for centuries. Here, there are no paved roads. You ride around on electric golf carts, motor scooters or horses. You can walk the length of Holbox Village in several minutes. You can maneuver everywhere around the 26-mile (42-Km) long island. There are no rocks, no impediments. The hotels line the beach front, but there are miles of untouched, gleaming, pure white sand for you to wander. You can stand and watch where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico touch and mingle their waters. You can see other small islands in the distance and, across the lagoon, the main coast. Book a tour or a hotel and be prepared to go birding or whale shark watching on this island, part of the Yum Balem Ecological Reserve.
