Coba Atkum Chen is one of those special surprises awaiting visitors to Mexico's Riviera Maya. It is about 4 miles past the town of Akumal, and to get there you will have to travel through some jungle. The name simply means Cave With an Underground River. A guided tour that lasts a little over an hour is very interesting and makes for a good outing for the whole family. You will descend as much as 50 feet underground, and see some beautiful stalactite and stalagmite displays. The cave is quite extensive, and is home to bats, lizards and small birds. In the crystal clear water of the pools in the cave you can see tiny shrimp and other organisms. With luck, you might also see eels and catfish.
