The Naval Museum of Alberta is the second largest Naval Museum in the country. Established in 1988, the museum is dedicated to the memory of the men and women who have served in Her Majesty's Royal Canadian Navy, while also educating laymen and spreading awareness about the role of the Canadian Navy in the country's defense.
The museum houses a comprehensive collection of artifacts and historical documents which were used in training and during war. Many of these exhibits date back to more than two hundred years. Here, you will find a model of the HMS Victory created by Calgary model builder Hans Scallhorn. This eight foot long exhibit recounts the image of Victory on the eve of the battle of Trafalgar. The museum also houses a diorama depicting the Normandy Landings by the Canadian Forces and also an exhibit featuring the hundred year history of Naval Aircrafts. You can also view an extensive collection of guns as well as depictions of critical historical moments by Canadian war artists. The museum also features a periscope and three immaculately restored RCN fighter aircrafts.
The Naval Museum of Alberta conducts tours for visitors of all ages which guide them through the history of the Canadian Navy and recount inspiring tales of all the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to the country.
The Naval Museum Library of Alberta houses over 3,000 books, which are of great research value to scholars and historians. Although the Library does not let out material, the collection can be viewed by prior appointment.
The Museum gift shop offers an array of Naval inspired prints, books and badges and apparel.
The Museum is currently closed to the public on account of its relocation to The Military Museums, 4520 Crowchild Trail. For further information, you can refer to the website http://www.navalmuseum.ab.ca or call 403) 242-0002.
