The former home of Senator Lougheed, the Lougheed House is a fine example of the late 19th Century Victorian eclecticism. Built in 1891, the house is now a noted public heritage site which welcomes a wide array of both locals and visitors to Calgary.
The large sandstone prairie mansion houses a number of historical exhibits that introduce visitors to the rich history of the Lougheed House. Once a social and political hub, the House has invited many distinguished guests including the Prince of Wales, to its lavish interiors. You can also stroll through the exquisite Beaulieu Gardens. The gardens have been restored to regain their splendor as a Calgary Horticultural Society Award winner. The plant material is accurate to the period of 1891- 1925 and the Garden's beds are redesigned to suit the changing seasons. Here you will find an oasis of beauty in the lush spruce trees, the vibrantly hued circle beds, each of which feature unique themes. You can even volunteer your services to the Garden in an array of activities that range from wedding and planting, to watering and edging.
The Lougheed House also organizes a variety of events like the "Ride through Time" where you can view a collection of vintage vehicles dating back to the 1920's. You can even indulge in old-fashioned games like croquet and badminton and dress up in vintage costume in keeping with the event's theme.
The Estate also houses a restaurant namely Isabella's Restaurant where you can feast on seasonal treats in a cozy historic ambience. Named after the Senator Lougheed's wife, Lady Isabella Lougheed, the restaurant is a fine place to stop by for an appetizing brunch or a sumptuous lunch. You can even buy unique mementoes from the Treasure gift shop which houses a variety of curios from chinaware and jewelry to children's toys and teddy bears. A membership with the Lougheed House will allow you unlimited access to the Lougheed House and Beaulieu Gardens during regular hours.
