Established in 1929, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a city park and a federally protected bird sanctuary, located along the migratory paths of several species of birds.
The site, which is dominated by a mature riparian forest, is home to more than 270 species of birds, 300 species of plants and a large number of mammals. The Sanctuary is also an ideal site for migratory birds like the Yellow-rumped, the Orange crowned and Wilson's warblers. Here, you can spot many rare bird species while also gaining an insight into the behavioral pattern and the life cycles of several common varieties. In order to maintain the sanctity and tranquility of the sanctuary, pets and bicycles are not permitted on the premises.
The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary also conducts several workshops for children where they are taught the various aspects of bird feeding, as well as encouraged to develop an interest in bird watching. The Birds of Calgary workshop educates them about the various species that can be found in this region. The 32 hectare wildlife reserve offers more than two kilometers of walking trails, where you can delve into the forest for some spectacular sightings.
While spring and summer are considered to be ideal for bird-viewing, an array of wildlife can be found here throughout the year. You can even choose to host a private party at the Sanctuary for groups of up to 30 people. Overnight trips can also be arranged.
The Sanctuary is open from 10 am to 5 pm everyday from May through September and from 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesdays to Sundays from October through April.
