Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump in Calgary, Alberta Canada is a location to mark some of the most unique times in the history of the area. Throughout this area, American Bison, or Buffalo were heavily populated. Those that originally lived here, called aboriginal peoples from throughout the American Plains, used this cliff and the area below to catch and kill the buffalo they needed to survive on.
Throughout the area are marked trails that have been used for hundreds of years. The original aboriginal camp can also be seen at the base of the cliffs. What's more, the skeletons of many of these buffalo are also found throughout the region. This serves as evidence of the way that they hunted in this area for more than 6000 years. They used their knowledge of the landscape as well as their knowledge of the buffalo's behavior to literally chase them off the cliff. When they fell, dying in the process, those from the camp below were able to use their flesh for meat and other purposes.
Those that visit the location today are able to walk along the trails and see the original campsites. You can go through the area with a guide and learn about the people and the landscape in the region. Those that visit should plan to spend a couple of hours working their way around the landscape. Call the location ahead of time to learn their hours of operation. Special group tours are available, too. Children and adults are welcome to visit.
