It's not often that a series of walking/riding paths attract attention from those far from the actual location. The Pathway System in and around Calgary, Alberta, Canada, covers a couple of hundred miles, making it the largest such system on the North American continent.
The system is used in all weather, even snow and rain. City residents and visitors run, walk, ride and skate along paths that travel through gardens, past rivers and skyscrapers, through forests and parks. Along the way people experience some of the most interesting and beautiful spots in this area of Canada.
This Pathway System is so well known and popular that area residents even organize a Traveling Pathway Show with the focus on safety and responsibility. Since 1994, the program uses signboards and other means of publicity to help people enjoy the Pathway System and use it safely. During winter, snow is removed from miles of the system so that people can continue to enjoy the pathways. The system has recovered from a 2005 flood that seriously damaged much of the Pathway System along two area rivers.
Whether the individual wants to run, walk, ride, roller skate or even ski, the Pathway System of Calgary is there, at no charge. Users do not have to be concerned about getting lost, as excellent maps are available from several locations. Calgary Parks and Recreation Department has additional information about this unique and wonderful Pathway System. The department may be contacted at P.O. Box 2100, Station M, Calgary, Alberta T2P 2MS, Canada. (403) 268-CITY (2489).
