Cabo San Lucas is known for many things — its parties, its rock and roll atmosphere, fine drinks and exotic nightclubs. However, what truly characterizes Cabo San Lucas is its natural beauty, specifically in the white sandy beaches and the warm, blue Mexico waters. The waters of Cabo are revered throughout the world and have been for centuries, as some of the best sports fishing can be found in the area. Not merely tuna and other medium catches, but big game fish like the Marlin. In case you have never seen a living Marlin before, some of these spear-snouted fishes can reach lengths of thirteen feet! Year after year, people have noticed the rich waters of Cabo produce some amazing sports fishing results.
Then it should come as little surprise that there is a Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, which is the largest Marlin fishing tournament worldwide. Every year, this contest is held and dozens of teams compete, patiently searching the waters of Cabo San Lucas to find the biggest catch of the year. Every October the event is held and rewards teams with some impressive competitive prizes as big as the Marlin! The 2007 year was quite a success and was presented by the Los Cabos Tourism Board and Hotel Association. Some of the more memorable team names consisted of Get Over It, Team Baja Boy II, Bad Company, Summertime and Que Sera. The Get Over It team took home a 378-pound Blue Marlin specimen, which earned $125,382 dollars in the first day and won them some contest awards to boot.
Teams catch and release their big fish according to regulations, and must videotape or photograph their catch being released to remain in competition. The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament contest allows big game fishing of species like Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, sailfish, spearfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dorado. The tournament lasts for three days and awards the final honors (along with other category awards) to the team that wins the most points per pound. There are first, second and third place categories and winning teams get cash prizes for scoring and releasing the largest fish as determined by weight. The 2007 Las Cabos Billfish Tournament has a history dating back to 1998 and is planning big Marlin-sized celebration for their ten-year anniversary in 2008. The 2007 Las Cabos Billfish Tournament saw a record setting $850,000 given in cash prizes.
If you love deep sea fishing, fishing and the thrill of competition then you should make plans to compete in or watch the annual competition as some of the best fishing teams in the world catch a large variety of fish. If you want to make the tournament the center of your vacation then you can stay at nearby resorts like the Best Western Quinta Del Sol, the Playa Grande Resort or the Buenavista Beach Resort among many others. If you love fishing then make plans to attend the one and only Las Cabos Billfish Tournament, where you will see sports fishing bigger than you've ever seen it before!
