The African American Cultural Center in Buffalo, New York is located on Masten Avenue, between East Utica and Glenwood Avenues. Visitors to the downtown Buffalo area will want to stop in and take a tour of this unique and interesting arts center. The arts center operates as a nonprofit organization. The goal of the arts center is to promote African American culture and the arts. The goal is also to help develop newer talents as they emerge. The Paul Robeson Theatre is also located within this cultural center. It is also the home of the Kakilambi African Dance and Drum Troupe. Visitors are welcome to explore the African World Studies Archives located here as well.
The cultural center has been in place since 1958 providing this type of nurturing and honoring tradition. It was the first type of cultural center like this within the Buffalo area. Not only can visitors view various exhibits and displays, but they can also partake in a variety of course offerings. Classes are offered by the professionals here for drama, percussion, and dance, as well as African history. Other classes are available in such topics as math and reading. The arts and crafts types of courses are available, as well. Courses are meant a specific group, but both adult and children courses are available.
Educational Directives, which is a special program offered, happens Monday through Friday in the afternoon. It helps to provide inner city children with better academic, communication and behavior skills.
