Built in 1668, The House of Seven Gables is a Historical Colonial Mansion in Salem that now serves as a very interesting museum that depicts the informative and fascinating history of the site.
Also known as the Turner House or Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, it was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner who was able to keep it in the family for three generations. After losing the family fortune, it was purchased by the Ingersolls who were relatives of Nathaniel Hawthorn. Nathaniel hawthorn was often entertained by his cousin in this reat house and later wrote a novel about his treasured times there. In 1908, the house was purchased by Caroline O. Emmerton, founder of the House of Seven Gables Settlement Association. She restored the house and turned it into a museum. Although throughout the years the house was remodeled, changed and added onto, many interesting features of the original mansion remain, including unusual forms of wall insulation, original beams and rafters, and extensive Georgian paneling. The house itself is very old and the grounds are very lovely especially the garden area. If you're into old houses or Nathaniel Hawthorne, you will love this great adventure.
Salem, Massachusetts is already a place whose very name conjures up images of early American history, but on March 29th, 2007, it became a National Historic Landmark District.
