Strawberry Banke, Inc was first an organization started in 1958 with the purpose of encouraging the town to restore historical buildings as opposed to demolishing them, which they had been doing as the law required at that time. In 1965, the Strawberry Banke Museum opened to the public and helped Portsmouth acknowledge, recognize and appreciate the history of the town as well as making them a great tourist attraction.
In addition to keeping the historical buildings intact so they can be on display for the public, Strawberry Banke also has many displays on the important people that played an important role in the shaping of Portsmouth as well as its future. Some of these famous people are Paul Revere, John Paul Jones, Daniel Webster and more. Some of the historic buildings are the Lowd House, Cotton Tenant House, Aldrich House, Peacock House and many more. The museum also has many decorative pieces of art from inside the homes such as ceramics, paintings, textiles, glass and metal objects as well as furniture.
On the site of the Strawberry Banke, you'll also find and enjoy the Tyco Visitors Center and Museum Store, Carter Collections Center and the Dunaway Restaurant.
