North End in Boston, MARenown for being Boston's first neighborhoods, North End is a lively, fascinating place for both visitors and locals alike.
Formerly known as "The Isle of North Boston", North End isn't nearly as cut off from Boston proper as it was during its' founding. For many years during the 1600s, the peninsula was merely a graveyard, windmill, and a few upper crust estates. It was during this time that the local Puritan Pastor Mather and his son egged on the witch trials of nearby Salem, goading on the events until they reached a feverish pitch and, eventually, his Puritan peers began to snub him. Later on, nearing the end of the American Revolution, the population of Boston began to wane and given the new opportunity for growth, many businesses flocked here. Unfortunately, with a sudden population change the area just wasn't ready for, North End became infamously dangerous- not even police would enter. Up until recent years, this impoverishment and desolation continued, despite the presence of such figures as Paul Revere, John F Fitzgerald, and Rose Kennedy. Now, partially thanks to a flourishing tourist industry, North End is a lively center for culture and recreation. Because of it's rich history, there are many tours offered here through it's numerous historical sites. Whether you choose to talk a walking tour of landmarks of the American Revolution, visit the Kennedy's homes, or read up on the Salem Witch Hunts, North End Boston has something for all interests.
