Kennebunk is a popular place for tourists with its many attraction and historical sites. One of their oldest and most popular pieces of architecture is the Wedding Cake House. This house, with its Gothic scroll saw trim and Federal style was built by George Washington Bourne for his wife, whom he'd been married to for many years. Another popular attraction here is the Lafayette Elm tree, which was planted in honor of General Lafayette's visit to the town in 1825. This tree is famous for its size, age and its ability to survive Dutch Elm disease, when other trees were destroyed. This Lafayette elm tree is also on their town seal, signifying its importance. A popular place, Lafayette Center, is located in what was once the Kesslen Shoe Mill. Kennebunk also has two of the oldest banks in the state of Maine. This town is rich with historic sites, including Summer Street, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
