The legendary Battle of Bunker Hill that kick-started the Revolutionary War is memorialized with this 221-foot granite obelisk that was completed in 1842. The battle pitted the brand new colonial army - who were under strict instruction not to fire "until you see the whites of their eyes" - against the well-trained British Redcoats.
Although the British ultimately emerged as victors, nearly half of their 2,200 troops were injured or killed by the smaller colonial army. Visitors will feel a surge of pride in the determination of America's earliest fighters for freedom and overwhelming emotions as they stand in the same spot where the battle for American freedom began centuries ago. Living history lessons simply don't get more real than the monument memorializing the legendary Battle of Bunker Hill.
