During the 80's, it became apparent to city officials that Baltimore's economy was failing and they decided to shift the focus from manufacturing to tourism. They breathed new life into Baltimore"s inner harbor and the Harborplace was born, an indoor/outdoor shopping pavilion with a cultural feel. The Harborplace is home to the Gallery, an indoor mall which feels like an extension of outside because of its glass walls and greenery. Not just a mecca for shoppers, however, the Harborplace also boasts Maryland's biggest and greatest aquarium and, in the summer months, the outdoor space is host to a variety of musical guests.

Every year, Baltimore celebrates its Harborplace by having a birthday party outside the gallery. This event takes place early in July and has extensive local media coverage. There is entertainment and festivities, a huge cake is cut in the midafternoon, and the night culminates in a spectacular fireworks display.
