This is an exhibit that focuses on the history of the self-emancipated, free black community in the Boston area in the 19th century who came together to built its own institutions to begin and lead in the movement to abolish slavery throughout our nation. Some of the different things that you will see in this exhibit includes early maps, photographs, paintings, poetry, historical newspaper articles, antique books, sculptures, and even architectural sketches, and sculptures. You will be able to look back at all of these things and see the actual physical buildings and structures where people came together to secure what was promised by the Declaration of Independence.
