Plimoth (Plymouth) Plantation Near Boston, Massachusetts

Plimoth Plantation
Plimoth Plantation
This "living" museum recreates life as it was in the 17th century when the new world was being discovered. The 1627 Pilgrim Village features costumed actors portraying colonists in daily life.

Have you ever wished you could go back in time to the days of Paul Revere and George Washington to see how they really lived?  You can at Plimoth Plantation!  Explore another world in another era.  At this historic, recreated 17th century village, you will accompany pilgrims as they go about their daily routine in the time of the Colonists.

Activities at Plimoth Plantation

  • Plimoth Plantation is a great choice for the whole family to enjoy while in the Boston area.  There's enough history, activities and hands-on experiences to keep you and the kids busy all day long!  You will have the opportunity to follow along with actors dressed as pilgrims, ask them questions about their lives and find out what it was like to come to such a foreign place to build their futures.
  • You will visit the home of Habbamock, the Pokanoket Wampanoag Indian who lived near the plantation and provided guidance and assistance to the pilgrims.
  • Not only is the Plantation a living history museum in itself, it's also home to an Exhibit Gallery which displays objects from the museum's collection.  You'll also be treated to an audio-visual presentation to give you a better overview of the 1620's Plimoth Plantation.

History at the Plimoth Plantation

  • Be sure to explore the waterfront area on your visit.  Here, you will see Plymouth Rock, Mayflower II and climb Cole's Hill. Among the many bits of history you will see on your visit is the Fort and Meetinghouse that dominates the hillside on the village property.  It's a timber-framed blockhouse, with a meeting area and upper gun deck that overlooks the surrounding area.  An incredible structure for those early days!
  • You'll also see renditions of the original thatched and clapboarded houses that represent the building tradition of rural England and the colonists' vast backgrounds.  The homes range from hovels, a simple A-framed dwelling, to more impressive structures that an early visitor to Plymouth Colony would have called "very pleasant and comfortable."  Each house contains incredible realistic reproductions of the period's furniture, tools and cooking equipment.  What's most impressive about these items is that they're not just for display purposes, the museum's staff uses them to re-create the daily lives of the Colonists.

Be sure to include a visit to Plimoth Plantation on your itinerary.  Dressed in period clothing and fashions and speaking in the accents of their character's origins, the Plantation is a real treat and a site to behold!

Plimoth Plantation Tour
I'm 66 and handicapped, and as a result, I can't get around as well as a healthy person. I couldn't make it to the outdoor displays, but others said it was very interesting. I was very happy with what I did manage to see.

Plimoth Plantation Tour
Another fantastic tour that the entire family will love! Postives: The reenactors on the Plimoth side are realistic and informative and polite. The site itself is beautiful and easy to navigate. Our family enjoyed meeting the artisans and watching them work. They very kindly answered all our questions. Negatives: The native americans/portrayers were not informative and held personal conversations and basically ignored the guests. Spend your time elsewhere. The shops were amazing and had terrific items available. We found so much here to add beauty to our homes as well as to read and educate ourselves.
