Boston, MA Weather and Packing Info

The Boston area experiences cold, brisk winters and warm, humid summers. Snow is common in the winter and rain is not uncommon in the area in the warmer months.

Spring in Boston

Bring clothing you can layer, a jacket and umbrella if you're visiting in Spring--especially if you're not used to colder weather. While you'll notice the locals are excited about the first "heat wave" of the season, daily highs average in the 40s all the way into the 60s with lows averaging in the 20s to 30s. Average rainfall is about four inches per month.

Summer in Boston

Average daily highs are in the 60s to 70s, pushing into the 80s and higher. The area is very humid. Lows average in the 50s and 60s. The average rainfall is approximately three to four inches per month. Light, loose clothing is appropriate for this time of year.

Fall in Boston

Again, layered clothing is your best bet, along with a jacket. The fall months see average daily highs that range in the 50s and 60s. Nighttime lows average between the high 30s to the low 50s.

Winter in Boston

Coat, gloves, scarf and hat, boots and warm sweaters should be in your suitcase if you're visiting Boston during the winter. The winter months are brisk and cold. Daytime highs average in the 30s with lows averaging in the 20s, but it's not uncommon to see lows dropping below zero.

Packing Advice for Boston Travel

Boston's climate is marked by long, warm summers and cold, frigid winters. There are periods of almost constantly changing weather and periods when the weather is stable. Good preparation and common sense is a good rule of thumb to follow.

  • Planning Your Packing. Anything you forget to pack, you'll have to buy. It is wise to make a list of everything you need to take with you and refer to it as you pack. This will ensure that nothing will be overlooked.
  • Preparing Clothes. Lay everything out before you pack. Fold, layer, and pack all like items together. Use undergarments and socks to fill space. Put toiletries and loose items in waterproof containers, in a kit or separate bag.
  • Packing For Family Members. With the exception of toddlers and infants, each family member should be able to carry at least one piece of luggage. A small backpack is ideal when traveling with young children.
  • Packing For Comfort. Products that will help you withstand the humidity, as well as, sunscreen, are a must. Natural fibers like cotton or silk and light colors are good choices for hot days. To avoid aching feet, pack a pair of familiar walking shoes. Make sure to pack jackets and sweaters for chilly nights.
