Annual Head of the Charles Regatta River Rowing Event in Boston, MA

New England's beauty sets the perfect backdrop for one of the Boston area's annual autumn traditions, the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Held every year in late October, the regatta includes 19 events for more than 5,000 athletes.

From the banks of the Charles River, the world's largest two-day rowing event attracts rowing enthusiasts and spectators from around the globe. High school, college and post-collegiate rowers compete on a 3-mile course that runs from Boston University to the Eliot Bridge. The weekend event features races through Saturday afternoon and all day on Sunday.

The first Head of the Charles Regatta was held on Oct. 16, 1965 after being established by several members of the Cambridge Boat Club. The winners are honored with the title 'Head of the Charles.'

Magazine Beach is one of the best locations for watching the races, as are the Weeks and Anderson Bridges near Harvard Square. There is no charge to watch the races. The athletic action is accompanied by typically brisk and beautiful fall days.

Whether you're a lifelong rowing enthusiast or a newcomer to the sport, come to the banks of the Charles River to enjoy the Head of the Charles Regatta.
