Established in 1928 by renowned craftsman Peter Anderson and his brothers Walter and Mac, the Shearwater Pottery upholds a family tradition of creating exquisite works in clay, carving a unique niche for themselves in the field of arts and crafts.
Till today, the Shearwater Pottery is family-owned and run... a rare remnant of the past, where time seems to have stood still ever since the pottery was first built. Visitors to the pottery can view some of the fine pieces of art on display and can even purchase specimens to take home. What's more, you can also view a live demonstration of genius in action as the descendants of Peter Anderson create a one-of-a-kind piece, right before your eyes. The pottery is best known for its award-winning art pottery, but also produces beautiful utilitarian ware, figurines, decorative tiles and other ceramic pieces. You can also tour the pottery as the soft-spoken James Anderson guides you through the entire process, right from throwing the clay to firing the pieces in their electric kilns.
The Shearwater Pottery was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has since been rebuilt and redecorated, in keeping with its original theme. The Pottery does not charge an admittance fee. You can even view a photographic timeline of the pottery and its legendary founder Peter Anderson on the website http://www.dreaminginclay.com. The website also displays images of some of the most outstanding works by the Shearwater Pottery which are on sale at the pottery. The pottery welcomes visitors from 9 am to 5.30 pm, Monday through Saturday and 1 pm to 5.30 pm on Sunday.
