A large number of communities have theaters constructed many years ago, but only a select few cities make the effort to keep the theater open and renovate the structure. Biloxi's Saenger Theater for the Performing Arts is one of the fine and fortunate places that will continue to serve the public because of such an effort.
Biloxi is currently in the final phases of a long project involving Saenger Theater in the heart of the Gulf Coast city. New seating and carpeting have been installed and walls and ceiling completely restored as part of a $2.5 million renovation. First reactions indicate that the theater now has much of the same feel and appearance it had when it was a new venue in 1929.
Eight years in the making, the renovation of Saenger Theater for the Performing Arts was actually completed in several distinct phases. In addition to a new roof, new wiring and new plumbing, the theater has an enlarged lobby and concession area.
Once a popular vaudeville theater and also a motion picture venue, the Saenger Theater for the Performing Arts is home to the Gulf Coast Symphony and local theater/dance groups. Thousands attend the 70 productions each year and the thousands will enjoy much-improved acoustics and ambience in the "new" theater.
On the performance list for the renovated site are: a reception with live entertainment; Gulf Coast Symphony's Christmas program; a film festival; Scrooge; and The Nutcracker. More information on any of the events is available by contacting Saenger Theater for the Performing Arts Manager Ron Chester by e-mail or by calling (228) 432-1601. The theater is located at 170 Reynoir Street. (228) 435-6291.
