The Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Ocean Springs just outside of Biloxi, Mississippi offers a place of tribute and remembrance to those men that lost their lives during the war.& The memorial pays tribute to those that lost their lives during the Vietnam War, as well as other wars. It is composed of two large granite walls that are sitting side by side. There are some 668 names listed from those that lost their lives in the war that were from Mississippi. Pictures of many of these men have been laser etched into the granite.
In addition, the memorial also helps to honor those that served in World War II. The State of Mississippi was awarded (as were each of the other states) a specific submarine to memorialize from World War II. The USS Tullibee is honored at this memorial as part of that requirement.
The site itself pays homage to the story of their attack and to the sole survivor that spent the remainder of the war as a POW. It also tells the names of the entire crew. In addition, the memorial lists all submarines lost during the war, 41 Freedom Boomers, memorabilia, pictures and quotes from others that served as submariners. The large monument here is engraved on both sides. It is large at 14 feet long by 4 feet high.
Each year on Memorial Day, a memorial event is held to honor those that lost their lives in all wars and through all service through their country.
Visit the main mast from the USS Mississippi (CGN-40). It rests here on the site of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
