The Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center of Arts and Education near Biloxi, MS, was founded in 1999 and has been serving the community ever since. This community center hosts monthly children's activities, community service events, movie festivals, and much more. You will be able to find something to do at the community center each week. Located in the Ocean Springs Public Schools Building, the Center has been the spot for many activities for music, theater, and other arts.
Named after the late Mary C. O'Keefe, who was the first woman superintendant of schools in Mississippi, O'Keefe championed the need for increased arts in schools so all children would be exposed to art, music, and drama. The restoration of the old school building is a symbol to her cause. Many people have helped over the years to raise money for the restoration and preservation of the building, which was constructed in 1927. Funds were also raised to help bring programs to the center for the public to enjoy.
Now that the center has been open for almost ten years, many people have benefitted from programs that help them have a better understanding of the power of the arts. Children in the area can take part in activities such as children's theater, game nights, story times, and other events. Adults will also be able to find activities to do including arts festivals, classic movie nights, and other events that they can bring their children to.
