Fort Massachusetts and the Gulf Islands National Seashore are tourist attractions paying homage to the beauty and the history of years past. Fort Massachusetts is located on West Ship Island, located about 12 miles off the shore of Mississippi. It was built here to provide defense for the country beginning in 1859. Building of the fort stopped in 1866 as it proved too difficult due to the isolation of the location as well as storm and disease risks. It was never fully built. In 2001, the Historic Preservation Training Center took control of the fort and helped to bring it back to life after years of decay and damage.
Visitors can explore the fort through scheduled and guided tours which happen from spring through fall. The only way to reach the islands is through a passenger fairy or through a privately chartered boat.
The Gulf Islands National Seashore offers many activities to do including camping, swimming, bird watching and fishing throughout the region. In addition, you can enjoy historic forts, like Fort Massachusetts. Walking and playing on the beach are enjoyable activities for many. In some areas of the Gulf Islands National Seashore are locations where you can camp, including the Davis Bayou Campground.
Although much of this area was damaged severely due to Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, many areas are beginning to reopen. This is due in part to the combined efforts of many non profit organizations. Nevertheless, prior to traveling here, do call and make sure that the location is open for business.
