The Armed Forces Retirement Home and Museum in Gulfport, Mississippi is the location of one of two of the finest retirement communities open to those that have served in the armed forces. Located on East Beach Blvd, in Gulfport, the Home and Museum were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina's wrath on August 29th, 2005. The museum and the home were unable to be saved, but all of the 400 residents that were located there were moved, safely, to the Washington DC Community Home, where they are currently staying.
There are plans to begin rebuilding the Armed Forces Retirement Home and Museum in the coming years. Demolition of the site will begin in August of 2007 and will continue through the year, with construction beginning in the spring of 2008, as per the latest updates available.
Prior to its destruction by the hurricane, the Armed Forces Retirement Home and Museum was home to a collection of artifacts from various wars including memorabilia from both World Wars and the Vietnam War. This was located on the 10th floor of the retirement home. The location can be visited by the public during open hours (the museum) and the retirement home with an appointment. This can be done at the Washington DC Armed Forces Retirement Home until the Gulfport location reopens in several years.
When open, the Armed Forces Retirement Home and Museum is free to the public and is open year round. Guests can enjoy a range of various types of war memorabilia, a historic remembrance of the wars fought.
