It really seems as if the Chinese are quite found of building bridges.
After all, the Lugou Bridge near Beijing is a marvel to behold and who could possibly forget the Great Wall of China. No it isn't a bridge, but looks very much like one to the eye especially from a distance. Add to that list Baliqiao Bridge also near Beijing and you have a virtual epidemic of bridges to see. We have a few bridges in the U.S. worth seeing like the Golden Gate Bridge, but even that has nothing on the Baliqiao Bridge. The bridge spans 8 miles across a canal connected to the Summer Palace once used by the Emperors of China. Actually, while it is no longer there, once a small temple and shelter stood near the bridge for the emperor's use. While the remains of the bridge are of the Ming Dynasty, there are ancient Chinese records that mention a bridge in this spot since the Yan Dynasty.
Like so many of the gorgeous bridges found in China and most especially near Beijing, the Baliqiao Bridge is made of white marble, and though unfortunately, is currently marked by graffiti, the original beauty of the construction still shows through. With any kind of luck, the Chinese government will go through with their plans to clean up the site and add a museum as well. No matter what state you may find the bridge in, keep in mind that Beijing and the surrounding neighborhood of Baliqiao has plenty to offer you.
