If you're looking for a casual diner which serves up an interesting array of traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex, then Magpie and Stump is where you're headed.
Certainly not a place for epicurean gourmets, the restaurant nonetheless rustles up an appetizing array of popular Mexican favorites. You can feast on the Tamale Pie, Fajitas and Burritos or even the more conventional enchiladas and tacos. For those who simply cannot do without their staple Canadian fare, the restaurant offers barbecued ribs, steaks and pizza for you to dine on. Dessert can well be the satisfying traditional fried ice cream, an appropriate end to a satisfying meal.
To accompany your meal, the restaurant offers you an array of tequilas and an innovate take on Kokanee beer, which is served in glass jars. The décor is a mish mash of a western salon, a cozy English pub and a Mexican Cantina. A Caribou head looks down at you from over a 40 year old Japanese rice-wine bottle, while the buffalo heads and the cactus plants strewn about the interiors add an air of ruggedness to the ambience. The dining hall is done up in dark antique wood walls, interspersed with the soft glow of dozens of candles. Service is friendly and polite, but can ten to get a bit slow, especially when the restaurant begins to fill up. You can also occasionally find a live band, adding to the already diverse ambience of Magpie and Stump. The restaurant is open from noon to 2 am from Monday through Saturday, and 12 pm through 12 am on Sunday.
If you happen to drop by between 10 pm and 2 am, you can also avail of the restaurant's happy hour specials. Prices are moderate and you can expect to pay between $8 and $13 for a lunch here. For further information and to reserve a table, you can call Magpie and Stump at 1 403 762-4067.
