Located in the historic Harmon Mall, the Harmon Gallery in Banff showcases the outstanding photography of three generations of the Harmon family, which spans over a period of a hundred years.
Founded by traveling photographer Byron Harmon, the collection in the gallery includes a series of photographs by Byron himself, his son Don, his daughter Aileen and even his granddaughter Carole. The collection, which comprises of more than 6000 photographs, is predominantly inspired by the breathtaking landscape and the spirit of adventure of the majestic Rockies, and is centered on the Golden Era of mountain exploration. Here you will find crisp black and white offerings as well as colored photographs, each of which has a unique story to tell. From picturesque landscapes, to intimate nature close-ups, the collection captures life in the Rockies right from 1903 to more recent times.
The Gallery also houses recitals by acclaimed pianist Gary Sill, while the Sound of Light Collection is comprised of compositions by Sufi composer Pir-o-Murshid Hidayat Inayat-Khan. The sacred Wazifa compositions are intended as an accompaniment to the ancient practice of the singing of the Wazifa, while Zikar offers a mystical divine experience, making the listener connect with the theme of remembrance of God. The gallery also houses a bookstore where you can recount the history of Alberta dating back to the 18th Century, with a series of images and stories by Faye Holt, or learn about the Native heroes, legends and fearless explorers and guides in the Banff and Lake Louise History Explorer by Ernie Lakustra.
Harmon Gallery, which is also remembered as the first site to be recognized as a Commercial Municipal Historic Site in Banff, is currently owned and operated by Carole Harmon. An outstanding tribute to the spirit of the Rockies and the spellbinding beauty of the region, the Harmon Gallery is a must visit for every visitor to Banff.
