Founded in 1974, the Canada House Gallery aims to make the work of talented artists, sculptors and craftsmen accessible to the masses while also lending them support by sharing their work with reputed collectors.
At the gallery, you will find an eclectic collection of contemporary paintings, sculptures and jewelry by well-known Canadian artists. The gallery focuses on keeping their collection interesting and diverse and this is reflected in the assortment of styles and techniques on display here. The art collection ranges from appliquéd canvases adorned with metal leaf by Jane Adams to the vibrant Prairie-inspired hues courtesy Lee Beams. You can also find the simplistic artwork of Terry Anany which infuses everyday life and her dreams and fantasies with innovative use of colors and shapes.
The collection of sculptures includes strong, vividly hued hand-blown glass deigns by sculptor Mark Gibeau and Jade carvings, which blend Chinese techniques with western themes, crafted to perfection by Ken Q Li. The Inuit Art collection comprises of books like The Moccasin Goalie to Gjoa Haven art by Simon Hiqniq. You will also find a unique collection of masks by Jody Broomfield and distinctive sculptures by Steve Smith in basswood, yellow cedar and alder.
The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable and soon draws you into their enthusiasm as they describe the exhibits and also impart tips on how to care for the art you purchase here. Spread over a 4000 square feet of fine arts and crafts the Canada House Gallery is open from 9.30 am to 6 pm from Sunday through Thursday and 9.30 am to 9 pm on Friday and Saturday. However, hours are likely to vary and it is advisable you call them before you visit.
