A must-see for any visitor is Baltimore's historic Lexington Market, the longest-running farmer's market in the world. Visitors can peruse the 140 vendor stalls and stock up on fresh produce, fish, poultry, and meat, as well as goodies from the delicatessens, bakeries, and candy stalls. Prepared foods are also on hand from seafood to international cuisine. Started in 1782, the market still occupies the original site where farmers from sixty miles away came to sell their fare.
Today, the Market also hosts some of the most charming special events in town. Among the most popular is the Chocolate Festival in October, where guests can get their fill of candies, cakes, and pies. In May the Preakness Crab Derby brings local celebrities out to coax blue crabs to the finish line and win money for charity, while Lunch with the Elephants presents the unusual sight of Ringling Brothers circus animals parading to the Market to enjoy a vegetarian buffet. Live blues, jazz, R&B, and soul are regularly presented at the Market's Arcade Stage.
