A delightful museum that should be on every visitors to-do list, the American Visionary Art Museum features works by self-taught artists who usually do not have formal training.
A delightful museum that should be on every visitors to-do list, the American Visionary Art Museum features works by self-taught artists who usually do not have formal training. The six galleries in the Main Building present exhibits of art focused on a single theme, while the Tall Sculpture Barn houses large art pieces. Past exhibits have included such unusual pieces as a life-size interactive chess set of sculpted metal angels and the Geller Effect art car developed by a psychic and covered with psychically-bent spoons and forks.
Out in the Sculpture Plaza, visitors will be met by the 45-foot tall Giant Whirligig, a wonderfully whimsical wind-powered sculpture created by a septuagenarian mechanic and farmer. The Museum hosts many activities and special events, from film series to arts and crafts workshops to artistic dog parades. The excellent Museum Shop stocks objects of art, handcrafted gifts, international crafts, jewelry, stationery, toys, and books, all with a visionary flair.
