In 1584 King James granted Sir Walter Raleigh a patent to buy lands, including the Province of New Jersey, although no land was purchased until 1722. When Seven Mile Beach was purchased, it consisted of 2,725 acres, was seven miles long and sold for $380. Stone Harbor is on the south side of Seven Mile Island. The first building to be put up here was an inn in 1891 along with seven cottages. Today, there are more than 3,000 properties on Stone Harbor. Finally, in the 1900s, they begin real construction on Stone Harbor, building seawalls, streets, pavements, sewage systems and all the important things to make a town. They also put in their first artesian well when they hit "Kirkwood Sands", where they now still get their pure water supply. They have since added a few more wells to supply them with the 200,000,000 gallons they need for their population.
Stone Harbor is today a quaint little town that has a lot to offer with many city attractions such as RiGi's Amusement Park, Island Watersports, Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center and more. They offer some great food markets and restaurants for those that wish to dine out.
