An unpretentious Italian restaurant, Il Poggio is a great success with the après ski crowd for its classic Italian food. Highly recommended as the best causal restaurant in all of Aspen, you can opt of a causal repast at the café or a more formal sit-down dinner at the restaurant inside.
With a distinct emphasis on authenticity, the flatbreads and focaccias are baked to perfection in 500 degree brick oven that presides over a corner of the café dining area. If you opt to eat outdoors, you can even watch the baker work his magic on your pizza. You can opt for the basic margherita if you like to play safe, but if you're the kind who's scouting for tantalizing options to stimulate your taste buds, then Il Poggio's just the place to be. From the primavera which is a delectable mélange of garlic butter, fontina, fresh tomato, zucchini, onions and basil to the more adventurous Scampi e Vongole which combines langoustino, clams, pancetta, garlic butter and parmesan, there's something here to satiate even the most discerning of palettes. You can take your pick from an assortment of the five pasta dishes which include Fettuccine which is stirred up with smoked chicken and Crimini mushrooms in a gorgonzola cream sauce, the ravioli and the farfalla. The swordfish and the grilled polenta come highly recommended. For desert, there is always the classic tiramisu to fall back on, or you can also nibble on the chocolate and almond biscotti as the perfect ending to a satiating meal.
The wine list is extensive with an emphasis on the Californian and Italian reds. Dinner is served every night from 5.30 pm onwards. Owing to the soaring popularity of the restaurant, it is advisable that you book your table well in advance. Service is prompt, polite and helpful and you can look to your server for recommendations to help you decide what to eat.
