Winter in Aspen

With an annual average snowfall of 173 inches, Aspen has plenty of powder for all types of winter sports, including cross country skiing, Nordic skiing, downhill skiing and dogsledding. Average snow depth during February and March is 28" and 27" respectively, while daytime highs often reach 40 to 45 degrees. Since the air is dry and the sun usually shines brightly, visitors are typically comfortable outdoors wearing several light layers and a jacket or coat on top, plus mittens and a head covering. The sun is bright even in the winter, so sunglasses come in handy as well! December and January are the coldest months, when highs are in the 30s and lows are around 10 degrees.

Spring in Aspen

As spring arrives in Aspen, the snow begins to melt, the days grow longer, and the first spring flowers break through to show their color. The snow pack remains for skiers and outdoor aficionados, making a trip to Aspen Mountain or to the nearby White River National Forest & Maroon Bells both comfortable and beautiful. Springtime visitors will want to be sure to pack several layers of clothing, as well as sunglasses and a camera.

Summer in Aspen

Summertime is equally delightful in Aspen. Days are warm and sunny, and humidity remains low, making the air very pleasant for strolling downtown or hiking in nearby wilderness areas. Highs during July and August, the warmest months, reach the upper 70s, and lows are in the mid-40s. Rainfall is relatively low, but short summer thundershowers are common in the afternoons. Before venturing out for a hike, visitors should consult an up-to-date weather forecast for information on the possibility of rain. Shorts and short-sleeves are comfortable on the warmest days, while cooler days may require long pants and possibly a jacket.

Fall in Aspen

Autumn brings out the vivid yellow of the aspen trees, and afternoons are dry and warm. Daytime temperatures during September and October are in the 70s, while nighttime lows may fall to freezing. Be sure to bring a jacket, as well as a sweater or sweatshirt!
